Discounts are the easiest way to increase orders and the easiest way to lose money. The difference between the two is whether the offer was designed or improvised.
This is a practical look at the promotion tools an online store needs and how to use them without training customers to wait for the next sale.
Coupons: control who gets what
A coupon is more than a code and a percentage. A well-built coupon carries:
- Discount type — percentage or fixed amount
- Minimum order value, so small orders do not erase your margin
- Maximum discount cap on percentage offers
- Usage limit overall, and per customer
- Validity dates
- Scope — whole store, a category, or specific products
- First-order-only restriction, when you are acquiring customers
Without a minimum order value and a cap, a 20% code will find its way onto your most expensive product on the same day you publish it.
Flash sales: use scarcity honestly
A flash sale works because it has a real end time. A countdown that resets every day is noticed quickly and costs you trust.
Run them on a defined set of products, with a visible original price, a clear sale price, and a genuine deadline. Stock the items properly first — selling out in twenty minutes is only a success if you planned it that way.
Campaign structure that actually converts
- Pick a goal. Clear old stock, acquire first-time buyers, or raise average order value. Each needs a different offer.
- Choose the mechanic to match. Clearing stock → direct price cut. New buyers → first-order coupon. Higher basket → free delivery over a threshold or a bundle.
- Set the margin floor before you set the discount.
- Prepare the store — banner, landing section, product tags.
- Measure orders, revenue, discount given and new customers gained.
Offers that lift the basket instead of cutting the price
Not every promotion has to reduce what you earn per item:
- Free delivery above a threshold set slightly over your average order value
- Bundles that move a slow product alongside a fast one
- Buy-more-save-more tiers
- A small credit toward the next order, which brings the customer back
Measure every campaign the same way
Record orders generated, revenue, total discount given, new versus returning customers, and margin after discount. Keep the history. After three or four campaigns a pattern appears, and you stop guessing which offer to run next season.
